WindMill Men’s Lacrosse Team of the Week of the Week 4: Shore Regional
Each week this spring, Shore Sports Network will select the WindMill Boys Lacrosse Team of the Week based on their performance over the past week.
The SSN Men’s Lacrosse Team of the Week for Week 4 is Shore Regional, who scored an important top 10 victory that improved their starting position for the upcoming Shore Conference tournament and continued what has been another strong season at West Long Branch. Shore Sports Network was in practice Tuesday to present the Blue Devils and head coach Gregg Malfa with a special framed Team of the Week certificate and a WindMill gift card.
Shore handled business in a Class B North game to start the week by crushing Neptune without a win, 24-2. Then came an intriguing non-divisional match against Southern Regional, which entered the game ranked No.5 in the SSN Top 10 with the Blue Devils ranked No.8.
The game was tied after the first quarter before the Blue Devils took the lead and methodically retired. They took a two-goal lead in the fourth quarter and beat the Rams in the final period to a 10-5 victory. Outstanding junior midfielder Jamie Mazzacco led the way with four goals and three assists and senior faceoff specialist Sean O’Brien had a big game in porn by winning 16 of 20 draws and picking up 16 balls on the ground . Andrew Decker scored twice, Carson Cooke and Carson Spallone each scored one goal and one assist and Aidan Murphy and Sam Madalone each scored. Sophomore goalkeeper Walker Hunter held on in goal with 15 saves to support the important win.
Shore’s impact players are mostly underclass and they’ve split production, offensively, this season. Mazzacco leads the team with 33 points on 19 goals and 14 assists while Madalone, a freshman, leads with 20 goals (with 10 assists for 30 points). Cooke (14g, 14a), Corey Moeller (7g, 13a) and Spallone (8g, 8a) each made significant contributions. O’Brien was excellent, winning 80% of his faceoffs while picking up 107 balls on the ground. Hunter posted a fantastic 71% save percentage and made 77 saves.
The Blue Devils are 6-3 until Tuesday, May 18, with their conference losses to No.1 Rumson-Fair Haven and No.6 Middletown South. The win over Southern has been their best of the season so far and they also have a win over a strong regional team from Red Bank. Shore will host a dangerous Holmdel team in a Class B North game on Wednesday before focusing on the Shore Conference tournament, which will be ranked Wednesday night and begin Friday. The Blue Devils also have division games remaining against Ocean and Red Bank Catholic.
