Track by track breakdown of “Were Afraid of the Dark” Overcoats

When it comes to grief, most will go around in circles wondering what was wrong and what could have been done differently. And while the overcoats’ I was afraid of the dark also asks questions like this, it’s an EP that also explores the intricacies of romance, the mess of those deep feelings, and most importantly, the bittersweet beauty of healing.
Through folk-tinged songs about trying to make it work, not knowing how to move forward, and acknowledging the uncomfortable feelings that come with the fallout, the band’s Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell give us a masterclass. on vulnerable songwriting that addresses themes of self-growth, stability and recognition of your emotions. So in honor of I was afraid of the darkthe exit of, the overcoats gave PAPER a track-by-track breakdown of each song and the meaning behind it, because if there’s one thing we know, it’s that a good cathartic cry fixes everything.
“Wait for me darling”
“Wait For Me Darling” is about being away from home and the loved one, both physically and mentally. It’s about the touring lifestyle, or making a mistake and letting someone go. It’s about asking that person to wait for you while you pull yourself together and also while you pursue your dreams of becoming a musician. Ryan Hahn really brought a Local Natives touch to the guitar sounds and production, and it brought the song to life. We also love that he sings on it!
“Blame it on me”
“Blame It on Me” was written around the time of writing for The fight, and it is a continuation of these themes. It’s about feeling stuck in a relationship or situation that you don’t have the strength to leave – or that you just really want to make work. There are sounds of children playing in the background to symbolize the innocence and purity you thought you had from love, before you realized it was messy, messy, and a little dark at times. Lawrence Rothman’s deep voice is so amazing on this track and really makes the song feel like a conversation between a couple in a truly magical way.
“The hardest part”
This song is about the end of a relationship. And the harsh reality that you might never know where that person ends up or what they are doing. It’s about letting go. We brought this song to Tennis because it needed their nostalgic retro-pop sound to help tell this story. And it had to be cooler. Alaina’s sultry voice tickles ears throughout the track, and Tennis’s signature guitar sounds soothe along the lyrically heavy journey.
“I was afraid of the dark”
Ughhhh⦠Hannah Joy’s voice on this track. We knew we needed a three part harmony on this one. And when we heard Hannah sing to it, we got goosebumps. We’ve loved Middle Kids for so long and having them to help us turn that acoustic song into a rock song was perfect. The song, at its core, is a folk ballad that feels true to the ages, a story of walking away from someone and singing their strength until it becomes real.
