Stream Maja’s new single “Cigarette Smoke”
Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Maja stepped out of her usual folk styles on her latest single, featuring the slow-burning R&B soul “Cigarette Smoke”.
A song taken from her debut album “I’ll Get There” due out later this year, “Cigarette Smoke” finds Maja navigating the different energies of her new town by channeling her inner Winehouse with high voice notes. Christina Aguilera’s lineup shines through.
“The opening line of the song is: ‘Cigarette smoke and familiar faces, wrong people in the right places, the right people in the wrong places, I’m learning to trust that I’ll find my place here.” Maja said. .
“There are parts of the big cities that we don’t want to see or that are undercover, and it was a bit shocking to leave Brisbane and I wanted to [‘Cigarette Smoke’] to capture the dark and gloomy parts of life in a big city.
“My first job was down the road from a brothel, which I wasn’t expecting haha!”
Rich in lush harmonies and mouth-watering piano melodies, “Cigarette Smoke” is a track that delves into its smoky jazz club roots wrapping its velvety beats around your ears like a soft kitty purring around your leg.
Ahead of its release tomorrow (June 25), scenestr is delighted to present ‘Cigarette Smoke’ today. Enjoy.
“’Cigarette Smoke’ was inspired by Nai Palm’s solo album ‘Needle Paw’ and I wanted to keep it very stripped down, using only vocals, guitar and backing vocals,” adds Maja.
“During the recording process I found myself frustrated with the timing of the chorus because it didn’t sound perfect, but in the end I embraced it because it was raw and real.
“It’s flawed and so is Melbourne. I hope listeners can relate to it that way.”
