Q&A on the Arts: Actress and Author Claudia Carroll on David Bowie, ABBA and Jane Austen
1. When did you first think about a career in writing and what were your first steps?
Writing is something I’ve always dreamed of, but never had the courage to try it. But with sincere thanks to the tremendous encouragement of the late and great Anita Notaro, I submitted my little book idea and a few chapters to my now (wonderful) agent, Marianne Gunn O’Connor, whom I am delighted to say, signed me standing. Seventeen happy years later, and I still find it hard to believe I’m doing a job I love so much.
2. The best concerts you’ve been to?
David Bowie in Boston in the 80s on the Glass Spider Tour. What a showman, what a show. U2 in Croke Park, before the pandemic. Breathtaking, as always. And Paul McCartney on RDS a few years ago. He put on a fabulous show of a show.
3. Fantastic wedding / anniversary group?
A reunited ABBA. Why not? All four are fortunately alive and well … I’m just saying.
4. The record you would take to a desert island?
The Beatles live at the Hollywood Bowl. Gets me every time.
5. What about the book you would take to a desert island?
Pride and Prejudice. Think Jane Austen wrote it when she was 21? It is the most perfect novel ever written.
6. The three best films?
Casablanca, because of this electrifying scene where the French and German anthems clash. Some like it hot, because every line is perfect. And All About Eve, because I like a good anti-hero who takes the stage. And who doesn’t love Bette Davis?
7. The worst movie you have seen and why?
Brideshead’s film revisited. I’m a huge fan of the iconic ’80s TV series, so the movie was a huge disappointment.
8. Favorite authors?
Audrey Niffeneger, Roddy Doyle and Nancy Mitford.
9. Sport (s) you like the most and best team (s)?
Wimbledon. As they say, it’s a sport for people who don’t really like sport. It’s basically me.
10. Ideal vacation destination?
Hot and humid everywhere please.
11. Do animals hate it?
Lack of punctuality.
12. Which is your favorite:
Having dinner? I liked the take out way too much during the lockdown.
Dessert? The more chocolate, the better.
To drink? Loving a crisp Chardonnay these days.
13. Who is your best friend and how do you know each other?
Clelia Murphy. We met in the locker room at Fair City and to this day we talk about 15 times a day.
14. Is there a God?
I hope so. There are greater things in Heaven and on Earth than those dreamed of in our philosophy.
