Professor SUNY Potsdam publishes a book on the music of Bruce Springsteen | WWTI
POTSDAM, NY (WWTI) – A new book written about Bruce Springsteen has local ties to the North Country.
SUNY Potsdam Professor Emeritus Dr. John Massaro released “Shades of Springsteen: Politics, Love, Sports, and Masculinity” on Friday July 16th.
During his career as a faculty member in politics, Massaro came to prominence for his unconventional way of teaching. He even gained national attention for his semester-long course exploring political themes in the music of Bruce Springsteen.
After retiring and moving to Wells, Maine, he continued to focus on the subject by writing “Shades of Springsteen: Politics, Love, Sports, and Masculinity”, published by Rutgers University Press and is now available from major retailers.
The book mixes memory and musical analysis, as Massaro reflects on being one of the first professors to design a college course on Springsteen’s work. The book focuses on love, masculinity, sports, politics and the power of music. Massaro explains how all of this is represented in Springsteen’s lyrics while also sharing stories from his own life that resonate powerfully with those lyrics.
âThe book clearly builds on the Springsteen course I offered from 2001-2009 at SUNY Potsdam. Indeed, Essays 1 and 7 focus on this course and the important role that members of the SUNY Potsdam community have played in revitalizing my life by welcoming me so openly and wonderfully into the community in 1986. I did. I’ll never forget that, âsays Massaro.
âShades of Springsteen: Politics, Love, Sports, and Masculinityâ is available for purchase from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and other retailers.
