Joe Russo | Joe Russo: “It’s easier to work with Netflix than with a traditional studio”
The Russo Brothers say Netflix is easier to use than a traditional studio.
The siblings – who are best known for directing four films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ – loved working with Netflix on ‘The Gray Man’ because the streamer is so indifferent.
Anthony told The Hollywood Reporter, “We love working with new partners. There’s something very energizing about releasing a movie like this with Netflix. They’re thinking about ways to reach audiences differently.”
Joe added: “They’re easier to work with than a traditional studio. Their mentality is more of a tech company than a studio. They’re very passive. No one bothers you. They have a different from how they control the film budget. It’s not as stressful as it is in a studio. There’s a lot of positives to working with them. And I would say I think digital distribution has fostered more diversity over the past five years that Hollywood has over a hundred.Because they’re regionally supported, they need to foster connection and talent in those regional markets.
“Of course, everything is always driven by money – but that’s a big by-product of a company like Netflix. Anthony and I are pretty disciplined in being presentation agnostic. ‘Extraction’ has been viewed 100 million times [on Netflix]. It’s the equivalent of a $2 billion movie in theaters.”
And Joe thinks there’s a place for Netflix to coexist with theatrical releases.
He said: “When we’ve worked with Marvel, we’ve traveled the world for a decade. What it gives you is an understanding that goes beyond a Hollywood-centric view of how to create content. We’re delivery agnostic. You know what might make everyone happy is that Netflix is starting to do 45-day windows and they’ve got their giant digital distribution platform. everyone wins.
