Boy George: career details
Boy George got his start in the music world when he joined the band Bow Wow Wow. Then he left to create his own group called Culture Club. Even though the band had a lot of demos, no one seemed interested in giving them a record deal. Eventually, Virgin Records and Epic Records teamed up to represent the band, and in 1982 their debut album, Kissing to be Clever, was released. The hit “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me” was on the album. It topped the charts in many countries and was number two in the United States.
Their next album was called Color By Numbers, and when it came out in 1983, it was an even bigger hit. “Church of the Poison Mind” and “Karma Chameleon” were both huge hits from the album. “Karma Chameleon” even topped the US charts. Culture Club had a lot of success in a short time, but when their third album, Waking Up with the House on Fire, was released in 1984, it seemed like the end of the band. The album didn’t do as well as the previous two, but it had the hit song “The War Song” on it.
By the late 1980s, Boy George was increasingly becoming a central figure. He made cameos on TV shows like “The A-Team,” and his alleged drug use garnered a lot of media attention. Culture Club’s fourth album, From Luxury to Heartache, was released amidst all these problems. “Move Away”, which was a big hit, was on the album. Culture Club broke up after the release of the album.
Boy George’s first solo album was released in 1987, after he got help for his drug addiction. The album, titled Sold, did quite well in the UK, but hardly anyone in the US heard of it. This could be because George’s drug charges prevented him from going to the United States to promote his new solo career.
In the late 1980s, George started his own record label and continued to release popular singles in the underground music scene. In 1992, the hit song “The Crying Game” brought him back into the public eye. The single was included on the soundtrack of the film The Crying Game. It was his first big hit in the United States and he became very popular.
Boy George’s next step in his career was to move into electronic/dance music and become a well-known DJ in London. This was clear on his next two albums, Cheapness and Beauty and The Unrecoverable One Man Bandit. Singles that were primarily about dancing, such as “Love Is Leaving” and “When Will You Learn”, did well in European markets.
Boy George’s music began to sound more like electronica in the early 2000s. This was evidenced by his 2004 album Yum Yum, released as “The Twin”. The album Ordinary Alien – The Kinky Roland Files was released in 2009. In 2020 he released new solo songs from his soon to be released album Geminis. Don’t look at the guide.
TV career
In 2016, Boy George replaced Tom Jones as coach on the fifth season of The Voice. Cody Frost, who came in third, was taught by him. After that, George left The Voice and went to work on The Voice Australia. He remained a coach for many seasons of this show. George took part in the eighth season of Celebrity Apprentice in 2017 and he came in second.
