Handwritten lyrics by Bruce Springsteen, harmonicas up for auction
Handwritten lyrics to rock legend Bruce Springsteen’s songs “Thunder Road,” “For You” and “Night” are expected to be auctioned later this month.
The sale will also include two harmonicas that were used on the original recordings of ‘Thunder Road’ and ‘Johnny 99’, when the auction kicked off on October 28 via Bonhams, reports aceshowbiz.com.
Written by Springsteen, the four-page manuscript “Thunder Road” is in pen on lined notebook paper and features two different drafts of the opening verse. It is estimated to sell for between $ 50,000 and $ 70,000.
The lyrics for ‘For You’ are also on lined paper and feature slight variations from the final version of the track, while ‘Night’ includes the words as they appear on the album.
The harmonicas are both signed and dated by Mike Batlan, who worked for Springsteen as a musical instrument technician from 1973 to 1985, and feature alongside a host of Beatles memorabilia – including two handwritten setlists of early group days – which is also on sale.
Howard Kramer, senior music specialist at Bonhams for their popular culture department, told Rolling Stone in a statement, “At this point the Beatles were on their way to becoming a band in the truest sense of the word. “
“Pete Best had not yet joined the group and the first engagement in Hamburg was expected in about two months. Very quickly, there was no turning back.
The musician’s signature guitar will be part of the Grammy’s traveling exhibit along with saxophones that once belonged to the late Clarence Clemons.
