Emeli Sandé | Emeli Sande wanted to sing like Whitney Houston on her new album
Emeli Sande wanted to sing like Whitney Houston on her latest album.
The 35-year-old pop star had just met his girlfriend, classical musician Yoana Karemova, when she started composing tracks for ‘Let’s Say For Instance’ and admitted she wanted to sound in the style of the late powerhouse – who died in 2012 aged 48 following a drug overdose – because of how much she was “falling in love” at the time.
She said, “You can get a lot off your chest [when recording]. I fell in love at that time. It was summer 2021 and we had just been cleared out so that’s when we had the studio session. I walked into the studio session and was like, ‘I want to do Whitney, like I really want to sing on this one’ because I had listened to her a lot. And I was in love and when you’re in love, everything just flows and you just want to send someone love letters. It goes from this private little thing to this big song so I loved it.”
The ‘Read All About It’ singer – who was previously married to lecturer Adam Gouraguine – then admitted she’d rather wait until a record was finished until she sang new music for her, but said revealed that “Ready For Love” was his girlfriend’s. new favorite from the album.
Speaking on the ‘Dish’ podcast, she told hosts Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett: “Well she’s an amazing musician so I usually wait until it’s really over because I don’t don’t want her to be like ‘Mmm…you I could have sung that better. But she’s always like “You have to sing! You go, sing! So when we did it, I said “I think you’re gonna like this one” but I waited for it to be over until I showed it. And now she loves it. I think it’s her new favorite from the album.
