Eddie Vedder returns to the stage after damaging vocal cords

Eddie Vedder returned to the stage on July 25, his first gig since damaging his vocal cords just over a week earlier.

On July 17, Pearl Jam headlined Lollapalooza Paris. The set took place amid a record-breaking heat wave in Europe, with wildfires raging across France. A few days later, the band revealed that Vedder’s voice had been damaged by the harsh conditions, forcing them to cancel shows.

“Due to the extreme circumstances of the last outdoor venue outside of Paris (heat, dust and smoke from the fires), our singer Ed Vedder’s throat was damaged. He saw doctors and received treatment, but for the moment his vocal cords have not recovered,” reads in part a post on Pearl Jam’s social media. “As a band, we are deeply sorry and have been trying to find options to continue playing . And Ed wants to play. There are simply no gorges available at this time.

The continuing damage forced Pearl Jam to cancel additional concerts in Vienna (July 20), Prague (July 21) and the first of two shows in Amsterdam (July 24).

Obviously, Vedder was feeling better in time for Pearl Jam’s July 25 concert, held at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam. The band played through a 21-song set, featuring many of their classic hits — “Alive,” Even Flow, “Better Man” — plus covers of Kiss’ “Black Diamond,” Prince’s “Purple Rain,” and “Rockin’ in the Free World” by Neil Young.
