Doo Wop Project to perform at the Greater Hazleton Concert Series Friday |
For those who enjoy the classic sounds of Frankie Valli, The Drifters, or Smokey Robinson, or wondering what Michael Jackson would be like if he lived in the Doo Wop era, The Doo Wop Project will perform on September 10 at 7:30 am. pm at the Hazleton Area High School Auditorium, presented by the Greater Hazleton Concert Series Inc.
The Doo Wop Project traces the evolution of Doo Wop, from the classic sounds of five guys singing tight harmonies on street corners to today’s biggest radio hits.
In their shows, the Doo Wop Project takes audiences on a journey from tunes by bands such as The Belmonts through their influences on the sounds of Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and the Four Seasons to the Doowopified versions of Michael’s music. Jackson and Marron 5.
The Doo Wop Project features stars from the Broadway hits “Jersey Boys” and “Motown: The Musical”. They include Dominic Nolfi, John Edwards, Dominic Scaglione, Jr., Russell Fischer, Dwayne Cooper and Brent Frederick.
Nolfi is an original actor in “A Bronx Tale”, “Motown: The Musical” and “Jersey Boys”. He was born and raised in San Francisco and studied voice at the San Francisco Conservatory. He attended the Boston Conservatory on a scholarship where he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater.
Edwards was last seen during the revival of “Smokey Joe’s Café” in New York City. This summer, he will star in Michael Jackson’s upcoming organic musical “MJ: The Musical”. His other credits include Broadway and the First Nationwide Tour of “Jersey Boys” and the Nationwide Tour of “Hairspray”.
Scaglione, one of the creators of The Doo Wop Project, is perhaps best known for his lead role as Frankie Valli in “Jersey Boys” on Broadway. Frankie Valli personally asked him to sing during his New Jersey Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Dominic has toured with Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Boyz2Men and Destiny’s Child.
Fischer is 5 feet 6 inches tall and has a tenor voice with a falsetto scale. He landed the role of Joe Pesci in the “Jersey Boys” Broadway company on his 22nd birthday. He was also an understudy for the role of Frankie Valli and was occasionally called upon to play both roles in the same performance.
Cooper began singing with a Christian a cappella group. He has appeared in the Broadway cast of “Motown: The Musical” and “Hairspray” and several national tours including “Smokey Joe’s Café”. Additionally, Dwayne is a songwriter / producer and has film and television credits including “Law and Order” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”.
Frederick is a Broadway musician and arranger. Most recently, he was conductor and keyboardist for “Kinky Boots” and “The Band’s Visit”. Brent is the music supervisor of Royal Caribbean’s Saturday Night Fever.
The Doo Wop Project connects more than six decades of music, bringing the sound of singing around the corner to a new generation. Scaglione grew up listening to this music. When he was playing in “Jersey Boys” he approached another cast member Nolfi with his idea of finding guys to get together and sing. From there, the Doo Wop project began.
Instead of a lead singer, Scaglione says they’ve split the show equally. All take the lead at different times and each member has a say in song selection.
Throughout the show, each singer tells their unique story with humor and warmth.
The Doo Wop project brings authenticity of sound and vocal excellence to recreate and, at times, reinvent some of the greatest music in American pop and rock history.
The underwriters of the Doo Wop project are Amcor Cares, Mistletoe Ball Association, Lagana Wealth Advisory Group at Janney Montgomery Scott, Hazle Azalea Fellowship Lodge No. 327 Free and Accepted Masons, All Care Home Care, Richard I. and Elizabeth Bernstein and Mimi Keba.
