David Crosby remembers Neil Young laughing on stage
David Crosby said his relationship with Neil Young was entirely musical and never social – but it often made them both laugh on stage.
Crosby has been estranged from his bandmates Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young for several years, but in a new interview on Apple Music. Zane Lowe Show, he recalled how he, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash forged a strong bond with Young in the early 1970s.
“Neil is an interesting guy,” Crosby said. “He loves song. He loves music. He loves to sing and perform. This part, there is no complexity, there is no tricks, there is no weirdness at all. is a musician. He loves it. As soon as his fingers touched the strings of the guitar, we were talking really good to each other. The chemistry of this band, when we were playing, was great. We listened to each other and we could arouse each other easily.
You can listen to the interview below.
Crosby noted that he “could go over to Neil in the middle of a song and do three offbeats at the right time and straighten Neil – like, I would put a fire wand in his butt. I could get his attention. . strongly by doing the right thing at the right time. And he could do the exact same thing. I would be singing a phrase, and he was crowning it with the lead guitar right in front of me, laughing. And that would be a moment – us would both end up laughing in the middle of the song because we’d just really, really screwed up. “
Despite this, Crosby said Young is keeping his distance between performances. “When we went on tour, he didn’t take the bus with us. He had his own drivers, his own stage. He didn’t even hang out with us. It’s hard for some people – you want others to be like you, and it isn’t. I was okay with that. I wanted him to be happy because when he’s happy he makes great music.
Reflecting on the fact that he no longer speaks with Stills, Nash, and Young, Crosby explained that “Groups are like weddings. People don’t go parallel, do they? They’re always either converging or divergent.… You get in, you are very excited. You are thrilled with each other’s music. You really like the process. You have fun. But after being with someone for 40 years, you rub them in the wrong way They rub you the wrong way There is a lot of criticism.
He added, “It’s happening in every relationship I’ve ever seen, every group I’ve ever seen. So I am not surprised that this is so. I’m totally cool with it. We have done a very good job.
