Dakota Johnson perfects the Laurel Canyon style in flared jeans

Rock and roll inspired the custom Gucci jumpsuit Dakota Johnson wore to the Met Gala, but the actor leans into Cali’s free-spirited style when she’s off duty. For a Santa Monica outing, the actor was more Laurel Canyon — think Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Mamas & The Papas singer Michelle Phillips — than David Bowie. Dakota wore flared jeans and sunglasses, paired with an Americana varsity sweatshirt, her favorite Gucci horsebit loafers and a Gucci Dionysus bucket bag. Dakota’s signature straight hair and bangs had an undone finish that added to the retro, bohemian feel.
Dakota’s flared pants are just one of many great jeans in her wardrobe: She wears Re/Done’s popular 70s jeans with brightly colored vintage Adidas X Wales Bonner sneakers, blazers and tees , and the brand’s more fitted Stove Pipe jeans are another favourite.
The actor’s chameleon-like ability to switch between high-octane glamor and girl-next-door is achieved with the help of his stylist, Kate Young. Dakota’s contribution is, of course, important and Kate has already said vogue that women are always “on the same page” when it comes to composing their looks. Dakota shines like a disco ball on the red carpet, but her everyday style is casual boho. As Young says, it’s “classic, minimal and elegant.”
