Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical for Perth Season at the Regal Theater
Buckle up Perth music fans, another 90s musical is about to debut for local audiences with a theater superstar in the cast.
Kirby Burgess – who starred in the musicals The Wedding Singer, Dirty Dancing, Grease and Bring It On – has been announced as part of the cast and will add another movie to the musical role when she stars in the upcoming Cruel Intentions: The 90s Music.
“It’s like the 90s soundtrack varies…whether you’re those dirty, baggy pants, your wallets on a chain…or you’re that chewing gum, air bags, and tongs. butterflies. There’s music on both sides of the 90s representing everyone’s tastes, and then in the middle you have this dark, sexy, intriguing story,” Burgess told AAA.
“I think this is a show that will really surprise people. It’s a great evening, but you also get a glimpse of how far we’ve come as a socialist society.
After starring in several musicals based on famous and beloved movies, Burgess said actors needed to step up their game when doing shows people were already familiar with.
“I love doing these kinds of shows (where) people have this nostalgic experience before they get into theatre,” she said.
“With that also comes a lot of responsibility because you want to give them all those moments that people remember from the movie, but you also don’t want to give them just a copy where they might as well stay home and watch the movie. .”
Based on the cult 1999 film which was re-released in theaters in 2019 and currently has a new TV series in development, Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical has been praised by original cast members Sarah Michelle Gellar, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair.
Burgess will play Gellar, who made the actor famous, as the scheming seductress Kathryn.
The theater star said she was looking forward to putting a modern spin on the iconic character.
“I think as a society we’re a little more educated, and so I can see her from this new world where we have a little more gender equality between men and women and a little more of a comprehensive understanding of (gender) inequality,” Burgess said.
The musical has a stunning ’90s soundtrack, from Placebo and The Verve to Britney Spears, *NSYNC and Christina Aguilera.
Cruel Intentions: The 90s Musical begins its season in Perth at the Regal Theater on August 24.
