Celebrity relations: David Bowie and Iman owe their romance to a hairdresser
A couple that took Hollywood and the world by storm – there’s no denying that David Bowie and Iman were a pair made for the limelight.
But it seems their romance was pretty unconventional, as the stories unfolded.
In the case of these two, there were no “fake eyes” on the red carpets, or disappearance in corners at lavish Hollywood after-parties – at least not at first.
No, what really started this iconic romance was none other than a blind date, and a date arranged by Bowie’s hairstylist, nothing less.
In an interview with WC2H Smooth RadioBowie’s longtime friend and hairstylist Teddy Antolin has revealed how he came up with the idea that changed Bowie’s life forever.
An evening with Ziggy, Iman and a stunned hairdresser
It all started one night in Los Angeles in 1990 when Antolin had the chance to meet Iman.
Antolin was immediately won over by the model’s beauty: “I thought it would be so cliché if I said ‘How beautiful you are’ but you end up doing that, and we started talking and a light bulb went on”, did he declare.
At the time, Bowie was “very lonely,” and Antolin was eager to see his friend’s spark and lust for life return.
“It was so sad – all that hard work David was doing every day and then he was on his own,” Antolin said.
After being dazzled by Iman, Antolin had a small idea, but a promising one. He was going to match them up, and he had no doubt that would work.
As it should be for such a sparkling and gorgeous couple as Bowie and Iman, as far as the official night goes, it all turned out like it was a movie.
She and David looked at each other … it was love at first sight, you could feel the electricity. “
“David arrived in a white Mustang sports car, dressed in white jeans and a white jacket – all denim,” Antolin said.
“Iman showed up in a black Mercedes dressed in black leather.”
No doubt the pair already seemed a perfect match.
“She had a big smile on her face, and she and David looked at each other… it was love at first sight, you could feel the electricity, something went off,” he continued.
From that moment on, it seemed like there was no one else in the eyes of both parties, but each other.
But according to Iman herself, she wasn’t that excited about teaming up with a major rockstar like Bowie.
“I didn’t want to get involved with a rock star”, she said Express in 2011. “No way. It’s not a smart thing to do, but David changed his mind. He wooed me.”
After this fateful meeting, the couple became inseparable and got engaged just months after their relationship.
That she was my wife, in my head, it was done. I had never looked for anything … with such passion in my entire life. “
Alone, Bowie has always been outspoken about his connection with Iman, calling him love at first sight.
“My attraction to her was immediate and global,” he said. Hi! magazine in 2016.
“I couldn’t sleep after the excitement of our first date. Whether she was my wife, in my head, it was done. I had never looked for anything… with such a passion of all my life. “
After only two years of relationship, Bowie and Iman tied the knot in a private ceremony in Switzerland on April 24, 1992.
Two months later, the couple celebrated their nuptials on a larger scale in Tuscany, with Bowie in a suit and Iman beaming in an elegant backless wedding dress.
The couple then began a jet-set life together, balancing both their hectic and demanding careers.
But despite their lifestyles in the limelight, the couple have always been incredibly private.
“We’re very private, so we decided early on to keep the press, editors and everyone out of our house,” Iman told her friend Naomi Campbell in a interview in 2013.
In 2000, the couple welcomed a daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones, known as “Lexi”.
Bowie already had a son, Duncan, with his first wife, Angie. According to Iman, he was a fantastic father to both.
Due to their love for privacy, Bowie’s health concerns were little known. In 2004, Iman helped nurse Bowie regain her health after suffering a heart attack from a blocked artery.
At the time of Bowie’s liver cancer diagnosis in mid-2014, few knew it, but he and Iman, a circle of close friends and those he worked with.
The former top model, then 59, left only a few hints ahead of the release of Bowie’s highly anticipated album. Black Star to be released on January 8, 2016.
Marking the major occasion, which was also one of great private suffering and pain, Iman made a series of posts and repostes to Bowie on Instagram.
Some were particularly poignant, including a quote posted by the model: “I don’t know where I’m going with this, but I know it won’t be boring.”
Yet, just two days after the big release, Bowie’s 18-month battle with cancer was over.
On January 10, at the age of 69, the Life on Mars? rocker died at the couple’s New York home.
