Brigitte Bidet is a dazzling Atlanta drag queen inspired by pop icons and old Hollywood glamor
Atlanta-based drag performer Brigitte Bidet is a classically trained dancer who has found freedom and fulfillment in drag. Drawing on an impressive dance and performance experience, as well as a love of early 2000s pop culture, Brigitte inspires others to embrace their true selves.
Growing up in suburban Atlanta, Joshua Rackliffe, aka Brigitte Bidet (@brigittebidet), never felt he could be fully himself. Now he’s using his drag alter-ego to celebrate all the things he felt he needed to hide as a kid.
“Brigitte’s aesthetic is very Y2K. I’m super influenced by Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Pink and the rhinestones, ”Joshua told In The Know. “I like to channel all those cheerful girls things that I couldn’t wear when I was little.”
Joshua remembers feeling like a stranger as a child. “Growing up gay in suburban Atlanta was a challenge because I felt like I was the only person like me,” he explained. “I’d be bullied for being gay and feminine, and all of those things are what make my drag amazing.”
Now Joshua celebrates the things that make him different. “Being able to refer to that time in my life where I felt like I couldn’t be myself, but now having that as an aesthetic for a drag character is like the ultimate empowerment,” he told In the Know.
Joshua went to school for dancing before becoming a drag artist. Although he enjoys dancing, Joshua thinks the world of drag is more exciting and appreciates that dragging can have meaning without taking itself too seriously.
“I come from this world where every piece of art had to have so much meaning behind it,” he told In the Know. “Now it’s like I want to dance to Britney Spears for three and a half minutes and do a split… there are comments about the company; there is a separation of gender and class.
At the end of the day, for Joshua, drag is all about community. Brigitte helped Joshua find himself, but she also helped him to empower others. Through dating, Joshua got involved in political activism and began mentoring other aspiring artists.
He told In the Know: “I am now in a place where I can share my own experiences with people and help them discover themselves.”
