This year’s awards come amid controversy, as NBC decided in early 2021 that it would not air next year’s ceremony after a briefing revealed a lack of black members within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. NBC noted that a 2023 broadcast would be considered in the event of “significant reform.” The HFPA responded by announcing 21 new members (including six black journalists), a diversity officer and a five-year partnership with the NAACP.
