19 of the craziest moments from the awards show
To be fair, this whole stunt was called the “worst Oscars ever” back in 1989, when the industry was still dominated by old-school Hollywood. Every award show these days has at least one desperate ratings ploy. Still, the crowd didn’t feel the 11-minute skit/musical number about Snow White discovering Tinsel Town.
The production ruined the career of Allan Carr, who is best known for producing the film Fat. Carr came with the numbers, and his career never recovered. How bad was the reaction? Well, some of the spinoffs included:
-The Walt Disney Company sued for using Snow White without permission.
-Several actors have signed a letter to the Oscars, demanding that there will never be a show like this again.
-Gregory Peck threatened to return his statue if the stunt was repeated.
The real tragedy is that Eileen Bowman, who played Snow White, was just beginning her acting career. Twenty-two at the time, she was proud of her performance and looking forward to her big break. But after the show, Rob Lowe told her to “get out of LA as fast as you can. There’s blood in the water and the sharks are circling for you.” Consider it an open petition to bring Eileen Bowman back to the Oscars next year.
